I have a theory to the why there are these recruitment attempts that apear cult like.
I guess it is something about the people Steve talked with beliving in a narativ, where their role is not a choice but a natural order of things. Then when they meet someone, that chould have the same role, but havent chosen it. Then the narrative is treatened and someone are reminded that others with the same cards on their hand dont nesesarily play them equally bad. If the newcommer can be recruited, then however the narrative is saved and the “cult member” dont have to worry about own bad choices, because thats just the natural order of things.

Every time “Stephen” would say he’s ashamed of himself, I cringed with anger. Hearing his “regret” in his voice was such a farce because he wasn’t ashamed or regretful when he was falling down the rabbit hole. He’s just ashamed he got caught.
